Funky Pumpkin Heads

The Challenge

The Funky Pumpkin Challenge is a relatively small art challenge on Instagram, 2023 was the fourth installment of the event and the second time I participated. The style and media of the artworks is up to the participants, the unifying factor is the theme of "pumpkin".

The prompts contained the word "pumpkins" and another term to combine it with and develop a motif. Each artwork needed to be finished within 3 days.

Funky Pumpkin Heads

To match the vibe of the challenge, which is overall very cheerful and whimsical, I decided to go for a set of storybook like Illustrations using and further developing my digital art style of combining digital watercolors and ink shading.

From these premises I designed a series of bright and colorful, fantastical portraits of "Pumpkin-Heads" featuring attire and patterns based on the respective second parts of the prompts, all of which I created entirely digitally in Adobe Fresco.

Pumpkins and Animals

Her head is based on the hokkaido pumpkin, her attire features attributes of various animals, amphibian, fish, bird and mamal.

A Hint of Fashion Design

I loved having the opportunity to dabble a little in fashion design in this project, I am not a professional fashion designer by a long shot, but I do enjoy creating my own clothing every once in a while and always loved the styles of the Victorian era.

Seamless Patterns

Inspired by "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" a 1920s German expressionist movie and one of the oldest horror movies in existence. The portrait depicts "Cesare - the Somnabulist"
